6 Ways to Create Grandmillennial Style

Hello friends!

Recently while doing research for our blog I came across the fairly new concept of Grandmillennial style. I continued to look into it more and realized that it follows very closely to our personal style.

Have you heard of it before? I think my favorite parts about it is that Grandmillennial is a mix of a couple design styles, allows for personality to shine and can be affordable luxury.

There are a couple elements that can be added or subtracted but here are our top six items that are needed to create Grandmillennial style.

One: Wallpaper

Wallpaper! We love it. But – we don’t have it in this house yet. It took us a long time to decide which rooms were going to get it. Now we are figuring out which particular wallpaper we want for those spaces. The downstair bath in this picture is going to get wallpapered above the wood paneling. I love that combination and a powder room is a perfect spot for a dramatic wallpaper.

Two: Timeless furniture

Classic, vintage and timeless furniture is a staple for Grandmillennial style and the best part? It can be thrifted! We absolutely love secondhand furniture and the character and patina they bring into the spaces. This is where affordable luxury comes into play. You don’t have to go spend thousands on antiques or new furniture – just spend time searching for those key items. Some finds that I would always grab are an English roll arm sofa, comfortable one-of-a-kind chairs and quality rugs.

Three: Wicker or Cane

There is nothing like the texture of wicker or cane items. They will add interest and variation to any space without it feeling too formal. We found this peacock chair at a local flea market and were able to get it for a steal. To keep within Grandmillennial style it is important to spread the wicker or cane throughout the house and preferably have one or two items in each room.

Four: Collections

Show off your collections – especially if you have inherited them! The more imaginative the collection the better. Do you have plates that belonged to your grandmother? Blue and white china that belonged to your mom? A bunch of brass candlesticks that you’ve collected over the years? Grandmillennial style makes sure to put these collections at the forefront and celebrate them!

Five: Patterns

The more patterns in your rooms, the better! I do believe that — but it is important to balance all those patterns, so they don’t overwhelm. If you want tips for that, check out this YouTube video (link to YouTube video about patterns) we did. A good chintz fabric will up your Grandmillennial game and brighten your home at the same time. Other fabrics that fit within this style would be stripes, small block prints and big florals.

Six: Layer Personality

This one is my personal favorite! Layer on the personality. Add those touches of things you love and add them often. Collect all the things you love and that represent you — and put them throughout your home. Don’t be afraid to get this wrong because you can’t. Every room in your home should have items that show off your character so no matter how small the space is you can add something.

Do you love all those design elements? We do too! Let us know if you are a newly converted fan to Grandmillennial style. Leave it in the comments below – we’d love to hear from you.
