5 Reasons to have a Color Palette in Your Home

Hiya friends!

I’ve talked about a color palette a couple times on the blog and on our Weekly Design Series but sometimes it’s more useful to have things in writing so I figured I would write a blog post about it as well.

First off, I would say that I treat our color palette as more like guidelines than rules — that being said I do find that it can be extremely helpful when designing and styling a home. Here are my top five reasons to use a color palette while decorating your home.

  1. The Best Way to Make Your House Flow

If your house is styled with an eclectic style, then having a color palette that you keep to will help your house feel cohesive and each space will easily flow from one to another. Our home is a mix of a lot of styles and I have found that because I’ve kept to certain colors throughout the house all the styles blend together seamlessly.

  1. A Great Way to Help Keep You Focused

A color palette will help you stay focused when making design decisions because some items will not be able to be included due to their color. Also, it helps narrow down the number of choices you have because only certain items are in your color palette and design decisions can be made from those options.

  1. Make Sure Every Room has Every Color from Your Palette

When looking at a room as a whole make sure to have every color from your palette in the space. This will make the colors and styles throughout the house flow from room to room, especially in an open plan space. Also, each room should have one item (IE, couch, curtains, rug, etc.) that has all the colors of your palette — this will make that room feel complete.

  1. The Color Palette Can Set the Mood for Particular Rooms

If you have a varied color palette then great! You will be able to utilize that when choosing paint color for each room. That can be a process on its own but when using your color palette to decide, make sure to keep in mind what the room is used for. For example, if it’s a bedroom you can go for the darkest color of your palette to create a cozy and intimate space.

  1. If Stuck, Use Shades That Are Similar

If you feel stuck or limited by your color palette and the mood you are creating in the space, then try using a close shade of one of your colors. That can help keep the flow but also change up the feel of that particular room. For example, the upstairs of our house has lighter shades of our color palette to help create a light and airy feeling upstairs.
