Before you Remodel A Room – Read These 6 Tips

Hello, our friends!

Are you just about to start a remodeling project? If yes, then great! We are so glad we caught you just in time.

We have been doing so many of those lately, as well as starting to help our clients with projects, that we have come up with 6 tips to make the process as easy and painless as possible.

You certainly don’t need to do every single one of them, but if you feel stuck when thinking about space these will help you conceptualize and plan out the project. Let’s knock this project planning process out together!

  1. Decide You Décor Style

If it is a new home or new to you home — we would recommend deciding on your style first. Find some inspiration to help make that decisions. Both Instagram or Pinterest have a ton of content broken down by style so they are great places to start. If your house is already decorated but you are changing your décor style completely or considering having this particular space being different than the rest of your house, then this is also definitely the first step to take.

  1. Brainstorm the Purpose of the Space

This goes for new properties or as well as a home you have lived in for years. Consider how you use the space – is it the best use of it? Could you mix it up? Combine the room’s purpose into two? (IE dining room and living room) Do you never use the room? How could you make it into a space that would be enjoyed.? We are strong believers that every room should be used in the home and if it is not being used as the space it is currently defined as it needs to be reinvented.

  1. Think About Your Color Palette

One of our favorite things to talk about! Make sure you know what your color palette is. Are you in a new home and needing to brainstorm a color palette from scratch? Or do you have one within your home already that you are working from? If you need inspiration for color palettes — we would recommend finding a designer you like and choosing a room or homes they’ve done and working off those. They are much easier to image as a room color palette then what you would find on Pinterest by searching “color palette”.

  1. Plan Your Furniture Layout

This is important to conceptualize during this process because it gives you a chance to consider changing the furniture layout if it is a room you have already finished once. If it is a new room then it is important to contemplate a bunch of different layouts before picking the final once. This is where you can let your imagination get away with you. Try placing pieces in places you would not have initially thought of and pushing yourself to stay in the space and realize what you like and do not like about that particular layout.

  1. Consider Your Already Owned Pieces

Make sure to shop your already owned pieces of furniture before going out to buy new pieces for a room. Furniture is expensive and you never know what that one piece from the bedroom would look like in the living room without trying. Maybe it is better in the new space – maybe not. Try it just in case! This will also help you reimagine the space differently as you only have the furniture you have and that could define the space different to what the new piece you had thought about purchasing would.

  1. Create a Mood Board

This is a new one for us! Since we have started working with clients, we have begun to create mood boards for the spaces we are designing. When it was just our home, we did not do that and just made sure we talked everything through properly. Now that we have client’s homes we are styling it is important to clearly communicate the direction of the space through the visual presentation of images, texts, and samples that will be used in the rooms.

Phew! That’s it – all six tips! We hope you found value in them.
