How to make your house look expensive

Now, when I say expensive, I don’t mean only spending lots of money. What I mean is putting the house together with a cohesive design that would have been put together by a professional.

Don’t know how to do that? Don’t worry we’ve got you covered. That is why we put this blog post together so that we could share exactly what you need to create it.

There are tricks that an interior designer would implement to make a house feel connected. Once you apply them to your home it will feel as if you’ve spent a lot of time and money with the help of an interior designer or stylist.

We have put together this list of elements that we believe, if used throughout the home, will help your house come across as if you worked with a top tier designer.

Number one: Color palette

OK, so I talk about this one in pretty much every single blog post — there isn’t anything else that I believe is more important. First and foremost, it doesn’t have to be a certain color palette, just a color palette throughout the entire home. Also, there is no limit to the amount of colors in your palette but just keep in mind some will be secondary colors. If you have a predetermined set of colors that you are designing every space off of then no matter what design decisions you make, they will always flow into one another. This is a staple for interior designers which is one reason why having a color palette will elevate your house design.

Number Two: Antiques

Now these do not need to be high priced antiques or any shenanigan like that. It only needs to be something that is old and been around for a while. Also, preferably the piece is from a beautiful time period for furniture and in good condition. We would highly recommend not paying a pretty penny for these antiques but to scour thrift stores, yard sales and auctions. The better the story of how you found that particular piece the better it will weave into the story of your house design.

Number 3: Unified style or styles

We are not going to pigeonhole you into one interior design style, that is definitely not our goal. Instead, we believe that if you are aware of every style you are drawn to and represent them all throughout each space of your house it will all connect perfectly. That way no matter what space you’re in every single style is creating the overall cohesive style of your home. The other benefit of this is that no matter if you move furniture around you will still be able to create a unified look in each room of your home.

Number 4: Full curtains

Well, this links back to when I was an interior design consultant and regularly created curtains, drapes and other window treatments. If you want to have your curtains and window treatments give off the impression that you are bougie then make sure that they are very full. I would usually go no less than 2 1/2 times the width of the window. This does not mean that you have to have professionally made curtains for every single one of your windows, more that if you are thrifting curtains for a particular window make sure that you are looking for a pair that will be 2 1/2 to three times the width of the window.

Number 5: Upgraded light fixtures

Alright so I say this, and you may be surprised that I don’t necessarily mean new light fixtures. All I mean is that they are quality light fixtures and that are of a similar style or representing the multiple styles that you have in your home. If you fall in love with retro light fixtures, then we highly recommend using those but just make sure that they have the proper wiring. I would also recommend that you always have a light that you can easily access once you enter the room. Since we live in an old house, so we understand that this is that is not easy but definitely a goal for each room.

Number 6: Stay away from trends

So, this one may be slightly controversial but let me be clear that if you love a trend when you see it as a trend or if you have always loved a trend even before it became a trend then 100% you should use it in your home. What I mean is do not follow a trend just for the sake of being trendy. They come and go so quickly, and you don’t want to have to be married to having to always keep up with the trends. Also, our core belief is that your home should represent your own individual personality and if you are falling into trends then you lose your own uniqueness in the space. Always lean into who you are when designing your home.

That’s it! What do you think of these six things? Do you think that they make your house feel more expensive? Do you feel that you have used all six of these elements in your home? I know that we could step up some of these. Which is important for us to remind you that even though we are the “professionals “that we don’t always have all of these elements in our own home. The process of creating a home is one to be enjoyed, to take time with and learn from –not something that is completed in one day.

Do you think that we missed anything important? If so leave us a comment — we would love to hear from you!
