Stop! Before You Choose a Room Color — Think About These Five Things

Well hello friends!

Are you currently brainstorming a new color for a room in your home? We are too! Hehe, we are always, actually.

We have changed the colors of our rooms so many times over the years. After all that experience, I think I have finally narrowed down the most important aspects to think about when looking at new colors.

One: Consider Your Home’s Color Palette

Okay, first, this is a guideline. Don’t go crazy over this.

What I mean by it is if your home already has a certain feel that you work within such as, pastels, then stick with that. That way everything will flow from space to space.

If you do have a full color palette with accents and all, then great! Keep to complimentary colors of your current palette and it will feel right.

But if you don’t have a color palette then I’d suggest brainstorming one. It will give you a spot to jump off from.

Two: What Is the Use of the Room?

When you think about the room that you are planning to paint – what is the primary purpose of it? This is important because the color of the walls can deeply impact the mood of the space.

Some additional questions to contemplate are, is this room a space where you will be in it mostly at night or during the day? Do you want it to have a cozy or a light and airy feel?

If it is somewhere where you will be spending time at night and want it to have a cozy feel, then go dark! If you use the room during the day and want an airy feel, then you could go with a lighter shade.

Three: How Much Natural Light is in the Space?

Alright, this one is a big one. Especially if you use this space during the day more than the night.
If it is a day room and gets an incredible amount of light, then congratulations you can use a dark shade or a light shade of paint.

Dark colors get a bad rap but trust me, the light will bounce around the room during the day in a room painted dark. I would even say it is more dynamic than a lighter shade.

If the room is north facing or does not have many windows, then I would say stick with medium shades if you want color or neutral lighter colors.

Four: Think About the Surrounding Room’s Colors

If your wall colors are all the main colors of your color palette then everything should blend perfectly, right? Right!

How often will your eye see both spaces overlapping? If it is often, such as having doors open, then imagine those colors layered and the feel it gives you.

But it is important to consider how the two paint colors will look next to one another. Will a door overlap? How will you break up the molding colors?

Don’t be afraid of having two strong colors meet. You do not need a neutral or white to break it up, I promise.

Five: What Other Items are in the Room?

I am a self-confessed furniture rearranger addict so I can completely understand that this could change but again, if you have similar colors or aura throughout the house then you should be good.

Do you have a large piece of furniture, like a sofa or a wooden cabinet? Then keep in mind the color and pattern of those and how they will look against the wall color.

If you have been brave and gone for a colored sofa (my kind of person!) then I would recommend doing a complementary color on the walls, that way the furniture pops!

One pro tip is I would try to have one item in each room that includes your whole color palette. Such as drapes or the collection of pillows on your couch. Your room will feel completely pulled together after that!
