Five Tips to Keep Your Flower Bouquets Fresh

Hello lovely people!

If there is one thing that I can’t go without it is fresh flowers. The happiness and joy that they give me when they are in our house is unlike any other.

We love our houseplants here at A Broad and A Brit but a brightly colored bunch of seasonal flowers? Hands down the winner.

Now if I was a billionaire, I would easily buy a fresh bouquet (or more than one) a day to enhance every table space in my house.

I kid. Well, maybe almost every flat surface.

But that’s not the case so I need to make my farm fresh flowers last as long as I can.

Here are five tips that I do every other day that help each bouquet last!

1. Deadhead and Take Out Any Dead Flowers

Every other day I go through the flowers and take out any dead ones as well as deadhead any individual flowers that have passed that are multiples on a stem. That way the plant is not wasting energy into the dead items and is continuing to open new buds.

2. Rinse the Flowers

I usually hold onto the bouquet with one hand while rinsing the stems off. Sometimes they start to go off or there are leaves in the water so it’s important to clean that off before it affects the stems too much. If there are any stems that need individual attention, then make sure to do so.

3. Recut the Stems and Remove Any Leaves

After I rinse the stems I continue to hold onto the bouquet and with the other hand cut away about ½ an inch of the stem. If you can, try to cut on an angle so that there is more of ana opening for the water to flow through. Also make sure all the leaves are clear of where the water will be.

4. Put in Fresh Water

This one is easy! I just rinse the vase out and run my hand around inside the vase to make sure it isn’t slimy. Then I fill it back up with fresh water, making sure to not add too much because if you give it new water every other day, it’ll be fine.

5. Put a Couple Drops of Melaleuca (Tea Tree oil) in the Water

This is the newest tip we’ve been using in our household. My mom told Matthew about it and it has really worked! Once there is fresh water in the vase, I put two drops of oil in and then gently stir it. If you have a very deep vase or a huge bunch of flowers, you could put additional drops in.

If you are able to do these five steps every other day (or daily or every three days, really) then your flowers will happier longer and you’ll be able to enjoy them for days.
