Hello friends!
One of our favorite features that Matthew built has never been highlighted on our blog and we realized we needed to remedy that! It is a quick fix and makes a great impact!
For Christmas 2020 Matthew gifted me with building a mantle in our bedroom where there was a perfect spot for one. The wall had been calling out for some character and it looks incredible! We put together the process in this post so that you can build your own.
Focal Point Wall
The first thing to consider is where to put the mantel, right? Yes. What we would suggest is selecting a room and then a wall that can be a focal point of the space. Make sure that the proportions of the wall can fit the design of the mantel without overwhelming or underwhelming the space. If you are unsure whether the size is right, make it out of paper and tape it to the wall to see exactly how it will look and feel in the space.
Tools
Alright so this part is actually pretty easy, but we thought we would share the few bits we did end up using so that you could see that how easy it was to put together. You need the wood for the mantel top, the two by fours for supporting the mantel, wood trim and detailing, nails, and caulk to finish off everything. We decided to add some finishing details but did not want to go to fancy because we wanted them to match the rest of the mantels in the house. It is up to you!
Paint a statement color
You don’t have to do this part, but we would highly recommend it, especially if you are going for a focal point or statement piece. We painted our mantel the same color as the wall, but you could do a contrast color to the wall so that it really pops. In our study we painted the mantel a white and it pops against the creamy linen walls. We love color so we will always vote for that!
There you go! Pretty easy, huh? Do you think you’ll do it? Let us know in the comments – we’d love to hear from you!
